Low Carbohydrate Snacks for Gestational Diabetes

Low Carbohydrate Snacks for Gestational Diabetes

low carbohydrate snacksCarbohydrates are a component of many foods that, over time, break down into sugar in your body. One thing to realize about carbohydrates is that eating too many carbohydrates, or the wrong kind of carbohydrates, can significantly raise your blood sugar. This can be dangerous both to you and your unborn child if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Eating carbohydrates is necessary, especially considering that even some of the healthiest foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are carbohydrates. That being said, you have to be aware of which foods have the lowest carbohydrates, especially when it comes to snacking. This is because snacking is an important part of a healthy diet during pregnancy, especially with gestational diabetes.

Almonds

A handful of almonds is a great snack during the day, especially for busy and on-the-go mommies to be. They are easily portable and come in many varieties. It is recommended that you steer clear of the sugared or heavily salted versions, but you might be surprised how sweet raw almonds taste as opposed to roasted. Make sure to pay attention to how much you are eating, because many nuts are pretty high calorie. Typically, a handful or so is enough for a healthy snack– about 15 to 20 almonds.

Light Popcorn

Popcorn is a great snack for those ladies that like to have something to munch on, especially if you are very attracted to eating unhealthy snacks like chips. A cup or two of light popcorn, without butter or much salt, is pretty low in carbohydrates and satisfies that need to crunch on something. To keep you satiated until your next meal, it is a good idea to incorporate a protein option as well, such as a low fat cheese stick.

Berries

Berries are truly one of nature’s super-foods. A small bowl, about ½ cup, of berries such as blueberries, is not only a low carbohydrate option but is very healthy in so many ways. Berries are a great source of so many vitamins and antioxidants, not to mention they are absolutely delicious.

Carrots

Carrots are delicious all by themselves, but they can also be paired with delicious options like hummus or low fat ranch dip. Carrots are naturally low in carbohydrates, are super healthy for you, and have such a satisfying crunch. To mix it up a little, have some carrot sticks and celery with some natural peanut butter for a very well rounded and delicious snack.

Hard Boiled Egg

A hard-boiled egg has less than five grams of carbohydrate, and is high protein to boot. This simple snack takes minutes to make, and can be made ahead of time to make your life so much easier. They are also very filling; it is a good option when you are feeling really very hungry and need to make it until your next meal.

Snacking is an important part of a healthy pregnancy diet, especially if you have gestational diabetes. Healthy snacking helps keep your blood sugar levels stable, gives you energy and nourishment between meals, and also helps you avoid overeating during meals. These low carbohydrate snacks are great options for gestational diabetes.
