The problem is that sometimes, foods that you never thought of may have the potential to be high in carbohydrates.

Dairy products, for example, are one of these foods that have carbohydrates but are sometimes not counted because people do not realize that dairy products contain carbohydrates. What many people do not also realize is that dairy products contain sugar as well. The ingredient lactose is actually a type of sugar, and it can raise your blood sugar.

The Struggles

While a dairy free diet has the potential to be useful in a gestational diabetes diet, it does not come without its struggles. Pretty much all of these struggles can be easily overcome, however, if a diary free diet is something you would like to pursue.

One struggle is that many people have a hard time knowing what foods to eat when they omit entire food groups such as dairy and even meat. The biggest questions usually revolve around whether or not you can get enough protein, especially when it comes to snacks and breakfast, if you omit dairy. You may be surprised to know, however, that protein and other vital nutrients come in many forms and it is easy to replace many dairy based foods. You can find many versions of milk, yogurt, ice cream, and other dairy foods that use plant based options rather than dairy. These are typically made by using soy or nut based sources, and they taste amazing. Best of all, many of these options are low glycemic, which means they are often much better for controlling blood sugar.

A dairy free diet could prove useful in controlling your gestational diabetes. You should talk to your doctor about any changes that you wish to make to your diet or lifestyle, as they will be able to give you advice on how to proceed based on your specific needs.
