For some women, the diagnosis is terrifying. It’s important to note that not all gestational diabetes diagnoses are of equal severity. Some are easier to reverse than others are, but reversing gestational diabetes is a definite possibility for many women who have it. You’ll need to do all of these things and more to make it happen though.

Follow Your Doctor’s Orders

Your doctor really does know best when it comes to reversing gestational diabetes. He or she is the one who can point you in the right direction for nutritional guidance and treatment options so that gestational diabetes doesn’t become a major negative factor for you and the baby you’re carrying.

  • Talk to your doctor.
  • Ask questions.
  • Take notes.
  • Follow directions.

They seem like simple tasks, but it’s easy to get caught up in the fear or worry for your baby so much that you forget what the doctor’s telling you. Reversing gestational diabetes will never happen if you continue to turn to old habits, particularly those that involve overindulging or turning to comfort foods out of fear or uncertainty. The bottom line is that you must work with your doctor to come up with a diet and fitness plan that attacks diabetes head-on if you want to have any hope at all of reversing gestational diabetes.

Eat Smaller Meals Frequently

The key to reversing gestational diabetes is to have acceptable, sustained levels of sugar in your blood. The last thing you want is a series of highs and lows throughout the day. That’s when things get really scary for many women. Smaller meals more frequently means that you’re getting a steady supply of nutrients throughout the day so that your body consistently has something to process and digest.

Exercise

It’s the four-letter word with a few leftover. When it comes to reversing gestational diabetes, though, exercise is a critical word that gets results. Those results are well worth the effort — no matter how much you rebel against the idea of traditional exercise.

The old way of exercising though is no longer necessary. You don’t have to do the whole Richard Simmons “Sweating to the Oldies” thing — unless of course that floats your boat. Today exercise can involve yoga for pregnant women (a much better match for women interested in reversing gestational diabetes) or even painting a nursery. It’s about getting up and moving around.

Reversing gestational diabetes may seem like an impossible mission to you when you first receive the diagnosis. For some women it simply seems to have too many movable parts. If you stop focusing on the big picture and start focusing on the plan you and your doctor created together, you’ll see that it really is all about following the plan and getting results. Once you figure that out, you’ll have all the tools you need to make reversing gestational diabetes look and feel like child’s play.

The Importance of Breakfast in Gestational DiabetesThere is a reason breakfast is said to be the most important part of the day. Many reasons, actually. Yet still a large number of people skip this vital daily meal. If you are skipping breakfast, you are missing out on a myriad of benefits that include mood boosting, energy, and more. It is very important for gestational diabetes to eat small meals throughout the day to maintain consistent blood sugar levels.

So let’s explore a few of the many reasons why breakfast is so important:

Starting Your Day Right

To function properly during the day, putting together a morning routine including a balance breakfast can help you start of on the right foot. Taking an extra few minutes each morning to sit down and eat breakfast gives you time to reflect on the tasks of the day and will help you remember things you might have otherwise forgotten. Breakfast time is also a great chance to have a little bit of happy family time before you all get wrapped up in work, school, and the stresses of the day.

Mood Boost

Starting your day with a healthy breakfast will have a great impact on your mood. People tend to get grouchy when they haven’t eaten. When your blood sugar is low and your body is craving sustenance, it is going to tell you something is wrong in the form of irritability. Skipping breakfast is a fast track to mood swings and surly behavior, add to that the normal stresses of everyday life and you are basically handing yourself a bad day. Give yourself a hand up and make sure to eat breakfast to give yourself a mood boost for the day.

 

Energize

 

Eating a healthy, balanced meal in the morning will vastly improve the amount of energy you have throughout the day. If you skip breakfast, you are heading out with an already empty tank.  Typically, breakfast is your first chance to eat the eight or more hours that have passed since your evening meal. If you are skipping breakfast, you are sending your body into pre-starvation mode and causing it to slow down and conserve whatever energy is remaining. By taking a few minutes out of your morning routine to eat, you are giving yourself an energy boost that will help keep you sustained until your next meal.

 

Weight Management

 

Eating a healthy, balanced breakfast is one of the number one recommended clues to weight loss and management. A good breakfast kick starts your metabolism, helping you feel fuller and more energized throughout the day. If you aren’t starting your day already empty and hungry, you are less likely to make poor choices when it comes to snacking and exercise.

 

Food For Thought

 

Starting your day with a good breakfast also helps with brain function during the day. With your metabolism in check and body functioning properly and happily, you are likely to have better focus throughout the day. A good breakfast will improve your memory and concentration. Lunches for Gestational DiabetesFor any pregnant woman, gestational diabetes can be a tough and scary experience to contend with.

Gestational diabetes is an abnormal condition in which females without previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high and increase blood glucose levels/amounts during gestational pregnancy.

Women with uncontrolled gestational diabetes are at risk for a myriad of complications including preeclampsia, jaundice, low blood sugar, or giving birth to exceptionally large babies which can cause delivery complications. A controlled diet is often the first step to controlling gestational diabetes.

It is important for any pregnant women, especially those with gestational diabetes, to follow a healthy dietary plan that includes whole foods and vegetables from every category. It is recommended that you eat three moderately sized meals with snacks in between. It is very important that you do not skip meals or snacks, and that you keep your options healthy and balanced.

Try for whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean proteins. You will need to control your carbohydrate intake as they turn into glucose in your body. Carbohydrates are found in many kinds of foods including breads, fruits, cereals, pasta, potatoes, even milk and yogurt. Desserts and sweets, of course, are not only high in carbohydrates but also sugar so you will need to limit yourself.

Especially when you are out and about, finding suitable lunch options can be intimidating. Here are some ideas for healthy Lunches for Gestational Diabetes:

Grilled Chicken and Artichoke Salad

Toss together fresh romaine lettuce, carrots, beets, green peppers and cherry tomatoes. Add or replace any fresh raw vegetables of your choice. Top with one ounce of sliced grilled chicken and steamed artichoke hearts.  Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of low fat Italian dressing. A handful of grapes make a fresh and sweet side for this yummy salad.

Grilled Turkey and Provolone Sandwich with Broccoli Salad

Place one ounce of sliced turkey and a slice of provolone cheese between two slices of whole wheat bread. Use either a Foreman grill or a pan on medium heat to grill both sides of the sandwich. Serve with broccoli salad: raw broccoli or store bought “broccoli slaw” tossed with shredded carrot, chopped red onion, sunflower seeds, and dried cranberries or raisins. Make dressing with lemon juice, Dijon mustard, olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss together and enjoy.

Veggie Parmesan Pasta

Cook together one diced fresh tomato, chopped zucchini, sautéed mushrooms, and whatever other vegetables you prefer. Season to taste with pepper, oregano, and basil. Toss with one cup of cooked whole wheat pasta and sprinkle with parmasan cheese.

Spinach Salad with Strawberries and Grilled Chicken

Toss fresh chopped spinach with sliced strawberries, one tablespoon of crumbled turkey bacon, and almond slivers. Top with one ounce of sliced grilled chicken and drizzle with two tablespoons of balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Fast food options:

•    A slice or two of thin crust pizza with a salad on the side.

•    Grilled chicken sandwich or (if you must) a cheeseburger, but remove the bun.

Most fast food restaurants offer healthier grilled options, including salads. Eating for two with gestational diabetes can be daunting, but there are a lot of choices out there. Just remember to focus on whole grains, lean protein, low sugar, and as many vegetables as you like and have great lunches for gestational diabetes.

Your doctor has plenty of excellent advice to offer. He or she can really change the tone and outcome of your diabetes story as long as you follow that advice and guidance to the letter. Sit down together with your doctor and work out a dietary meal plan, exercise and fitness plan, and continued health plan to monitor your health and that of your baby as you work through “my pregnancy diabetes” to get to life on the other side.

Gestational Diabetes Test Numbers

Gestational Diabetes Test NumbersIt is very confusing to deal with all those gestational diabetes test numbers that you encounter when diagnosing and treating the condition. The standards on the normal gestational diabetes test numbers vary from institution to institution. In addition, these standards are bound to change in the next decade or so as more studies about diabetes in general are being conducted. In general, the normal blood glucose value for women without gestational diabetes is between 60 to 120 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) approximately two hours after meals. This is the primary basis for the gestational diabetes test numbers that are being used to diagnose gestational diabetes.

Normal Gestational Diabetes Test Numbers

Between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, you will be subjected to a screening test known as the one-hour glucose challenge test to find out if you need further testing for gestational diabetes. In this test, you will be asked to drink a sweet solution. After one hour, you blood will be tested to see if you fall within the normal range of gestational diabetes test numbers. Basically, those who go higher than 130 to 140 mg/dl are at high risk for developing gestational diabetes and are subjected to a confirmatory test to determine whether they have the condition or not.

The confirmatory test being used for pregnant women in order to determine if they have gestational diabetes or not is known as the oral glucose tolerance test or OGTT. In this test, you will be asked to fast overnight prior to the test. Once you arrive at the laboratory, a blood sample will be extracted to see if you met the normal gestational diabetes test numbers for fasting. You will then be asked to drink a syrupy and sweet solution with a high amount of glucose. Afterwards, your blood will be tested for three consecutive hours after the test to ensure that your gestational diabetes test numbers are within the normal range.

The normal fasting gestational diabetes test numbers should be 95 mg/dl or lower. After one hour of drinking the solution, the gestational diabetes test numbers should be lower than 180 mg/dl. Two hours later, the normal test numbers would be 155 mg/dl or lower. Finally, after three hours of drinking the solution, your test numbers should be less than 140 mg/dl. In general, any gestational diabetes test numbers higher than 200 mg/dl already qualifies for gestational diabetes. If two of these gestational diabetes test numbers are higher than normal, then you will be diagnosed as having gestational diabetes.

If you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, keep in mind that the gestational diabetes monitoring numbers are as important as gestational diabetes test numbers. You should keep your gestational diabetes blood sugar levels below 140 mg/dl one hour after meals and around 120 mg/dl two hours after meals. If your glucose levels remain uncontrolled, you and your baby might suffer from complications of gestational diabetes, such as excessive birth weight,  preterm labor and delivery, and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in your baby later on in life.

Even if you were fortunate enough to have a consultation with a nutritionist, you may have many unanswered questions. Eat Small Meals Frequently

Be on the Lookout for Hidden Sugars

What many people neglect to tell you when suggesting various gestational diabetes meal ideas is that some surprising foods have hidden sugars you need to be aware of. Eating your veggies is great. However, when you have gestational diabetes, you need to be selective about the fruits and vegetables you choose.

Eat these Vegetables Instead

Leafy greens are almost always an excellent choice for diabetes-friendly meals and snacks. So are eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, cauliflower, green beans, snow peas, squash, and avocado (though this should be eaten sparingly because of its high fat content). Keep these in mind while on the lookout for great gestational diabetes meal ideas and try to build meals (and snacks) around them.

Keep Meals Simple

The easier it is to include great gestational diabetes meal ideas into your daily routine, the more likely it is that you’ll actually do it. Keep things simple, make them friendly to your condition, and include a little exercise (physician approved exercise that is) into your daily routine for a healthy baby and a healthier you. Quite often I get requests for good recipes for gestational diabetes.  Well, it is ok to find one or two select recipes on a website or on someones blog but what really what is needed is a set of recipes for that you can count on being correct for your needs both calorie intake and carbohydrates.  As I prepared these gestational diabetes recipes for myself during my run in with gestational diabetes, twice, I found that searching for these and figuring these out was not really easy.  And I am a registered dietitian and should be able to figure it out.  It was not easy, but I hope you will be very happy that I spent the time to refine these and get them right for all of us!

Each gestational diabetes recipe is created for the specific purpose of being a gestational diabetes recipe.  These are not strictly diabetic recipes, which is more commonly what you will find in cookbooks and online forum threads.  Each recipe has all the nutritional information that you will need for tracking in your gestational diabetes journal.  As your doctor wants you to track and document all the blood glucose numbers and foods you will need a gestational diabetes journal to manage and track all the information.

Once you’ve been diagnosed, the next step is to work with your physician to develop a gestational diabetes treatment plan. Effective treatment of your gestational diabetes is not only necessary for the sake of your health, but also for the health of the baby you’re carrying. It’s important to understand that there are effective gestational diabetes treatment options available. Sometimes, the most effective route is a combination of one or more of the available treatments.

Diet and Exercise

Unless your blood glucose levels are high enough to warrant immediate concern and aggressive treatment, many doctors will choose to begin by making adjustments to diet and exercise as your primary method of gestational diabetes treatment. It’s the gentlest, treatment option. It’s also one that provides the greatest long-term benefit to your health and the health of your baby.

Small changes may include thirty minutes of low-impact exercise four days a week, a switch from three large meals per day to five small meals, and a reduction of sugar intake throughout the day.

This may be an effective enough gestational diabetes treatment to get your sugar levels under control. The key is to find a balance that allows you to maintain a steady, lower, blood glucose level throughout the day rather than sharp spikes and drastic drops throughout the day.

Oral Medications

Some cases require more aggressive gestational diabetes treatment methods. Oral medications used in combination with diet and exercise can deliver outstanding results for maintaining stable blood glucose levels within the normal range. Sometimes, they become necessary later in pregnancy as hormones build up in the body making it more difficult to metabolize the glucose.

Sometimes they are necessary from the moment you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. In some cases, oral medications such as Glyburide or Metformin are prescribed in conjunction with insulin as a gestational diabetes treatment.

Insulin Shots

GESTATIONAL DIABETES TREATMENT OPTIONSThe need for insulin shots as a gestational diabetes treatment is often, and unfortunately, viewed as a failure of some sort. That is absolutely not the case. You and your baby need certain carbohydrates in order to be healthy. If your body is unable to produce a sufficient amount of insulin to process those carbs, then your body needs a little boost.

Insulin as a gestational diabetes treatment, however, does require the greatest learning curve. You must not only learn how to test your own blood glucose levels, but also how to administer the necessary shots The good news is that the needles are super fine and do not hurt. Most would say the glucose monitoring is more painful than the shots and with modern testing strips, that’s barely a blip on the pain radar.

Diet and exercise are the preferable method for controlling blood glucose levels. However, they are not always effective in and of themselves. That doesn’t mean you should give up on them completely as a gestational diabetes treatment. Long after you have your baby, continuing these healthier food and fitness habits can help prevent you from developing type 2 diabetes.
